“What is that?” Rob asked.

Maera was able to see enough to know what it was. “It’s a letter. Read it aloud.”

Jimmy sat in silence, his eyes running over the words, then cleared his throat to translate it for them. “Dear King of the World, I believe this might be the third letter I’ve written that will go unanswered. Have I angered you? Upset you? Calcutta is sopping wet and dreary, more so because Naani passed last night. I am sad, but I’m also not sad, if that makes sense. I don’t know what it’s like to have someone I used to know die, because I still feel her presence all around us. Ammi is awfully stressed. We had to bury Naani within twenty-four hours—and on top of all that, settle ‘her affairs’. What do you think that means?

“Have I upset you or annoyed you? Will you come to visit me? Ammi said we wouldn’t stay here for long. She wants to go back to U.P. right away. But I still want to see Papa. Ammi won’t even let me ask about it. She tightens her lips and ignores me when I mention it.

“I hope I haven’t upset you, King of the World. It would be nice to hear from you again.” Jimmy folded up the letter.

“Who is the ‘King of the World’ he keeps mentioning?” Sara asked.

“It’s her,” Jimmy said, flipping through the diary until he landed on a page with a drawing of a shabby-looking tent, with a girl sitting behind its folds and looking out. Even with the rough outlines, Maera could tell the girl had a striking pair of eyes. She would have been much more beautiful than what her naana had managed to capture.
